About Your Coverage

What you need to know

Non-Medicare eligible and Medicare-eligible retirees and their dependents may continue to receive benefits coverage under the Plan. This coverage applies only to certain benefits and does not include Weekly Accident and Sickness, Life Insurance, and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance coverage.

Ready to consider retirement? Contact Milwaukee Drivers Pension Trust Fund at 414-479-0344 for more information on your next steps.

Eligibility

To qualify for medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision benefits under the retiree plan, you must meet one of the following bulleted requirements:

  • Be retired, receiving a pension from the Milwaukee Drivers Pension Trust Fund, and eligible for active benefits at the time of your retirement; or
  • Be at least age 60 or eligible for active benefits at the time of your retirement; or
  • Be eligible for active benefits for at least five of the seven years immediately preceding your retirement; or
  • Be eligible for active benefits at the time of your retirement and provide proof you are retired under Social Security

If you’d like to waive or postpone retiree coverage, refer to the Retiree In-and-Out Program.

Paying for Coverage

You must make monthly self-payments to the Fund for retiree coverage, or your coverage will end. The premium amount is determined by the Trustees based on your years as an active participant, how many dependents you cover, and whether or not you and/or your dependents are eligible for Medicare. Your self-payment will be automatically deducted from your pension check. An authorization form to confirm the automatic deductions is included in the retiree health letter that was sent to you. Self-payments made by personal check are also allowed but only in certain circumstances (i.e. your premium is more than your monthly pension, so you use spouse’s retiree account to pay health coverage premiums, etc.).

This payment amount is subject to change and can increase or decrease at any time due to health care costs shifting over time. The Fund will notify you of changes to your monthly premium before it goes into effect.

Qualifying Event

Once you’re enrolled in retiree coverage, you may not make any changes to your coverage elections unless:

  • You marry or divorce
  • You dependent dies
  • You or your dependent becomes eligible for Medicare
  • Your dependent is no longer considered an eligible dependent under the Plan
  • You are participating in the Retiree In-and-Out Program

If you experience a qualifying event, your monthly self-payment amount will be adjusted accordingly.

COBRA Continuation Coverage

Your dependents will be eligible for coverage under the retiree plan only for as long as you are eligible and they continue to meet dependent eligibility. However, if you die while covered under the retiree plan, your dependents may continue to receive coverage as long as the monthly self-payments are made or through COBRA Continuation Coverage.
